Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprains occurs when you twist, turn, or roll your ankle in an unnatural way. It can result in tearing or excessive stretching in one or more ligaments. The duration and type of treatment for an ankle sprain varies on the degree of damage and severity of the sprain.

If you sprain your ankle, you can reduce swelling by applying ice and elevating the ankle. A compressive bandage can also be used to support the injury while its healing. In some cases, a serious ankle sprain may need to be repaired through surgery.

Athlete's Foot

Athlete's Foot is caused by various types of fungus. This chronic infection is often spread in places where people go barefoot, such as swimming pools and public showers. Symptoms range from itching and mild scaling to blisters and painful inflammation. It is usually found first between the toes or on the arch and can spread to the bottom or sides of the foot.

Various medications are used to treat this fungal problem, including prescription and over-the-counter treatments.

A bunion forms when the joint connecting your big toe to your foot has a swollen, sore bump. The base of your big toe gets larger and sticks out, which can cause the skin around it to be tender and red. It can make walking and wearing shoes painful, and may result in chronic pain or arthritis. The leading cause of bunions are wearing shoes that are too tight, so it is best to not wear shoes that actually fit your feet.

Bunions do not resolve themselves because they are bone deformities. Treatment for this condition both relieves pressure and pain and stops growth of the enlargement.

A corn or callus is formed by repeated friction from skin rubbing against irregularities in shows or bony areas of your feet. They normally are found on the soles of feet and on the toes. These are caused by shoes that don't fit properly, toe deformities, socks that don't fit properly, and having your feet rub against seams or stitches inside of your shoes.

Diabetic Feet

For patients with diabetes, they should inspect their feet every day, as minor injuries can turn into major issues. Diabetes decreases your blood flow, so it takes longer for injuries to heal, and puts you at higher risk for infection. If you have any level of neuropathy (loss of sensation) you may not recognize the problem getting worse, which could allow the infection to spread faster.

Flat Feet

Because their feet have fat pads, babies and toddlers appear to have flat feet when they are standing. Most children outgrow this, and it is painless to them. In older children and adolescents, however, it can cause an aching pain in the ankle, lower leg, or foot. Painful progressive flatfoot, also known as tibialis posterior tendonistis, refers to the inflammation of the tibialis posterior. When this tendon is torn, stretched, or inflamed and then left untreated it can lead to chronic pain or severe disability.

Patients with hammertoe have toes that are bent at the middle joint so it resembles a hammer. It is a deformity of the second, third, or fourth toe. In the beginning the problem can be easily corrected, but if left untreated, they can become fixed in place and require surgery. Hammertoe is caused by shoes that do not fit properly and muscle imbalance.

Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Spurs)

This term refers to arch and heel pain due to the inflammation on the bottom of the foot. It is more specifically the inflammation of the connective tissue, which stretches from the base of the toes, across the arch of the foot to a point where it connects into the heel point. Treatment is typically treated with conservative measures such as stretching, ice packs, orthotics, and physical therapy.
